Do I need a bookkeeper if I use accounting software?

Short answer

Software automates data entry but doesn't check it. Bank feeds miscategorise transactions, duplicates slip through and reconciliations get skipped. A bookkeeper reviews and corrects the data so your reports and tax returns are accurate.

Detailed answer

Automation still needs review

A bank feed records cash movement, not necessarily the full accounting event. A customer deposit might be an advance rather than revenue, a transfer might be duplicated and a loan repayment includes principal as well as interest. Software cannot reliably infer these distinctions from a short bank description alone.

Choose a suitable review routine

For a simple business you may enter documents yourself and have a professional review the file periodically. As volume or complexity increases, monthly support becomes more useful. Reconcile to actual statements, review outstanding invoices and bills and investigate tax balances instead of assuming that an empty bank-feed queue means the books are finished.
