Hiring
Should I outsource my bookkeeping?
Short answer
Outsource when bookkeeping takes you more than a few hours a month, your books are behind, or you need reliable reports for tax, lenders or investors. Compare the full cost and scope with an in-house hire; savings vary by business and provider.
Detailed answer
Compare the whole cost
Compare a provider's quote with the full cost of doing the work yourself or employing someone: salary, supervision, software, training and time spent correcting errors. Savings are not guaranteed. A very simple business may be comfortable doing its own records; a growing business may benefit more from regular review and a dependable close.
Keep control of your records
Agree who supplies receipts, approves payments, answers queries and reviews the reports. Keep ownership of the accounting subscription and ensure you can export your data. Start with a clear handover and review the first few month-end reports before deciding whether the arrangement meets your needs.
