Do I need a CPA or a bookkeeper for my small business?
Short answer
Most US small businesses need both: a bookkeeper to keep monthly books accurate and a CPA or enrolled agent to file taxes and advise. Using a bookkeeper lowers CPA fees because your records arrive clean.
Detailed answer
Assign the right responsibilities
A bookkeeper can maintain transactions, reconciliations and ordinary reports. A CPA or other authorised tax professional can handle work within their qualifications, including appropriate tax advice or representation. An enrolled agent is federally authorised for tax practice, but does not necessarily provide the same financial-statement services as a CPA.
Coordinate year-end preparation
Ask your tax preparer for the records and schedules they expect, including loans, assets, payroll and contractor payments. Have the bookkeeper prepare that pack throughout the year. Confirm who files each return and who responds to notices; using both roles is useful only if their responsibilities are clear.
